Nobody tell the Liberal Party and the right-wing crazosphere that their AWU smear campaign is kind of backfiring. Encourage them in their delusion that they’re drawing blood, that they’re on a winner, that Australians really are determined to vote at the next election on whether Julia Gillard opened a file or wrote a completely accurate letter on instructions almost twenty years ago. Yeah, that’s definitely going to work! You’re doing well guys! Keep it up!

Yeah, Tones! You’ve got her on the ropes!

It reminds me somewhat of the US right-wing obsession with Benghazi before the US election, and whether Obama called it terrorism quickly enough. Or whatever it was – it was another one of these frenetic concoctions full of sound and fury and signifying very little indeed. Anyway, in the weeks leading up to the US election, if you’d relied on Fox News for your information (and an amusing number of right-wingers did), you’d have thought Romney was going to get over the line on outrage over the Benghazi “scandal”.

And the darn voters turned out not to give a toss about it.

I suspect the Liberal Party here are on a similar wicket. And it looks like they’ve already wasted one potential successor to their present leader.

NEWS: Opposition politician encourages government Minister to challenge PM and destabilise government

Seriously, ABC? This is some kind of news?

Wow I cannot believe he said that except that of course he did.

This is why reporting “politician said” stories requires more than just repeating what they’ve said. It requires the journalist to perform some kind of basic analysis on whether that statement is actually meaningful for his or her readers, in what way, and in what context.

So – “Both MPs criticised the opposing leader while encouraging each other to challenge for the leadership themselves, clearly hoping for the other side to experience leadership instability before the next election. The Opposition shadow minister complimented the Prime Minister’s one-time rival at her expense, whilst the government Minister suggested that the Opposition leader was the government’s “greatest asset”.”

Admittedly, as soon as you do that it becomes immediately apparent how pointless the story is. POLITICIANS PAY INSINCERE COMPLIMENTS TO PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE THEY HOPE ARE DUMB ENOUGH TO ATTACK THEIR LEADER.

Simply repeating Turnbull’s bullshit for seven paragraphs – particularly the vacuous “faceless men and factions” thing as if there’s a non-faction faction in the ALP and there aren’t factions and schemers in the Liberal Party – wastes the time of politically-savvy readers and utterly misleads everyone else.

You know, ABC, just because politicians appear on a TV show on your network doesn’t make it news. If providing even basic analysis makes it obvious how much it isn’t news, then please use that space to report something that is.

Those “Gillard AWU scandal” stories

Anyone still bothering to read them?

(Apart from those who would never vote for Gillard in a blue fit who are desperately hoping that one of them will at some point contain some kind of specific allegation and some evidence that the PM did something wrong 17 years ago that has anything to do with her being PM now, obviously.)

Yeah, me neither. Just skip them now, and avoid any paper that, by placing one on the front page, is telling me that everything else inside is even less worth my attention.

Carry on wasting your time then, media and Liberal Party.

Oh, and just so you know what effect your obsession with this non-story has – it increasingly conveys that you’re really not all that confident in your attacks on what an “incompetent failure” she’s actually been in office. If someone has a good argument against a government policy, they don’t spend all their time on 17 year old smears that months and months of desperate effort still haven’t managed to turn into an actual allegation of wrongdoing.

Makes you proud to be Australian

Oh, wait – so we actually are going the deterrent route on refugees? The only one that has a prospect of causing them to give up and live (well, maybe) in danger back home – trying to treat them worse than the places from which they’re fleeing?

Ms Woods fears for the asylum seekers’ mental health. ”They’re saying they will continue this hunger strike until they die because they feel powerless and trapped”. She described shade from soaring temperatures as inadequate, and said some people were unable to contact their families.

At the end of last week 390 detainees had been transferred to the centre, which is fast approaching its capacity of 500. Detainees live in tents with the Immigration Department yet to confirm completion dates for buildings.

As a hunger strike enters its 11th day the Immigration Department confirmed about 30 asylum seekers were treated for dehydration and heat-exhaustion symptoms last week.

Well, treating them with even a small amount more humanity than the worst places in the world is hardly going to work! (And by “work” I mean “bully them into going somewhere else”.)

That’s what I love about Australia – our capacity to abandon all pretense of humanity in order to save ourselves from the minor inconvenience of helping a small number of refugees seeking the kind of assistance we’d demand ourselves if anything ever happened to us here. We’re AWESOME. Best country in the world, mate!

The Unhinging, collected

How are the crazies who warned us that a second Obama term would be where the gloves finally came off, where he finally revealed his demonic visage, stole all their money, forced them into death panels, banned religion, took their guns, made them get gay married, and ceded the US over to the UN, which is actually a tyrannical powerful One World government… going to process reality when that doesn’t happen?

And in the meantime, what are the funniest efforts by the far right to blame everyone but themselves?

Don’t worry, I’ve seen Andrew Bolt’s only people who agree with me are using their heads idiocy. But let’s collect them, for the lols.

UPDATE: It’ll be tough to top this one, via Catsidhe in the comments via Jezebel – The end of liberty in America: Only course of action now is to fight back, electoral politics not working:

Starting early this morning, I am going to un-friend every single individual on Facebook who voted for Obama, or I even suspect may have Democrat leanings. I will do the same in person. All family and friends, even close family and friends, who I know to be Democrats are hereby dead to me. I vow never to speak to them again for the rest of my life, or have any communications with them. They are in short, the enemies of liberty. They deserve nothing less than hatred and utter contempt.

I strongly urge all other libertarians to do the same. Are you married to someone who voted for Obama, have a girlfriend who voted ‘O’. Divorce them. Break up with them without haste. Vow not to attend family functions, Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas for example, if there will be any family members in attendance who are Democrats.

Do you work for someone who voted for Obama? Quit your job. Co-workers who voted for Obama. Simply don’t talk to them in the workplace, unless your boss instructs you too for work-related only purposes. Have clients who voted Democrat? Call them up this morning and tell them to take their business elsewhere.

I shouldn’t be enjoying the ravings of a clearly ill person so much, but – he’s both ill and a nasty piece of work, so doesn’t that make it slightly okay? No? Damnit.
