Hockey’s Excuses

You’ve got to admire Joe Hockey’s fortitude in going out there and announcing flimsy, humiliating excuses for the fact that despite his prophecies of doom, the Australian economy is actually booming:

“This does demonstrate the resilience of the Australian people in the face of a flawed government,” Mr Hockey said. “Imagine how well our country could do if we had a good government?”

Heads you’re hopeless, tails we’re better.

Our rhetoric is completely independent of reality! Events in the real world affect it not at all! If things go badly, it’s evidence that this government is hopeless! If things go well, it’s still evidence that this government is hopeless! By “evidence that this government is hopeless” we mean every single thing that happens regardless of what it is.

We have defined reality as “this government is hopeless”.

Any other reality – like “facts” or “figures” incompatible with our reality presented by institutions we occasionally cite ourselves – is just a figment of your deranged imagination.

Public perception has run into the brick wall of reality, truth and facts.

    I wonder which will survive.

The prospect of having Hockey as Treasurer is frightening. The Libs can’t be serious.

  3. To be fair to Hockey, Abbott’s even worse. See his outright lies this week about the Reserve Bank’s reasons for lowering interest rates.

No need to be fair to Hockey. He is a joke. Not that I like Swan all that much, but credit where it is due. Hopefully the good economic news will continue.

  5. I think there is a need to be fair to Hockey.
Barnaby Joyce is the real joke!

Hockey is just a poor schmuck who’s been told to smear shit on a gem so that it looks like a turd and pretend that he’s proud of his efforts.
I think that Hockey is essentially a good bloke with a lot of talent but, as the old saying goes, it’s hard to soar like an eagle when you’re surrounded by turkeys.
Since I’m in a magnanimous mood, may I also tip my lid to SB for giving credit to Swan for a job well done.
There are those on this patch who condemn SB for being an ineluctable right wing troll.
I wonder if they are willing to acknowledge that, perhaps, they may need to re-appraise their prejudices and judge people a little less reflexively?

  6. The number one product of the conservative parties is spin.

    Thanks Marek.

Basically I’m a pragmatist – if the government can keep the economy strong that is good news for all of us, and they deserve credit for it. They now have an opportunity to focus on good news and rise above the mocking vindictive tone that has infected our politics. If they can distinguish themselves on this score they will make life very hard for the opposition. I doubt the Libs will be able to give up the personal attacks and they look ridiculous trying to criticise what is a good economic outcome.
