Ooh, snap. (Dragon?)

Far right Menzies House darling Peter Phelps isn’t exactly the cluey-est MP in the NSW Parliament:

The session had its bizarre moments. At one point just before midnight Mr Shoebridge described the legislation as “draconian”.

It prompted the Liberal MLC Peter Phelps to leap to his feet with a point of order, telling the house that Mr Shoebridge was mistaken because “there are no dragons in NSW”.

Truly one of the brightest minds of his generation.

Far out. Surely someone who so passionately believes in Our Western European/Christian Heritage (TM) would recognise a reference to Draco of Athens.

  2. I’m hoping for his own sake he was making a somewhat failed attempt at humour.

  3. Seriously? A six hour speech on the wages and conditions of public servants?

And they honestly wonder why the vast majority of the general public view politicians as irrelevant, self serving tossers…

I’m pretty sure he was joking.

And the maiden speech doesn’t seem like a good link if you want to make him look like a fruitloop – I’d focus on the “all scientists are Nazis” shtick :

  5. gavinm: I don’t think we can give him that much credit. This is the same “historian” who believes that scientists are totalitarians at heart and Nazi sympathizers: http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/2742686.html Hello! Bletchley Park? Manhattan Project?

I for one welcome our new dragon slaying overlords. I whole heartedly support Mr Phelps’ no-tolerance approach to dragons and as such his objections to any suggestion of legislation that may increase our dragon intake (which can I say is already too high). I am sick of them turning everything to ash. We all know that ASIO is aware of far more dragons living amongst us than they let on. Won’t someone please think of the children?

I continue to advocate for this no-tolerance attitude to expand to velociraptors and, of course, zombies. I am less hopeful about the latter; our State and federal parliaments continue to demonstrate a general view that zombies are not only ok, but that they are entitled to ministerial portfolios.

  7. Given the huge amount of projection on hand, it is quite likely that one day Phelps will be found in a motel room, stark naked and secretly watching a Dragons vs Broncos game and rooting for the Dragons. Just let it out Peter – just admit your unrequited love of dragons and all will be forgiven!

I take it unique you’re not into that dragon on dragon action on HBO?

Shh, N. Only non-Australians are permitted to know what you’re talking about.

I suppose the cat really is out of the bag now J. 🙂

  11. Poor Draco. He doesn’t really deserve his reputation. It’s not like he invented the laws and punishments – he mostly just wrote down customary laws. It was only once they were all written down that people realised how harsh they were, in totality.
