ALP to left – “don’t vote for Greens, they’re lefties!”

Obviously the ALP, concentrating on fighting for right-wing votes with the Liberals, is a bit worried about progressive voters saying “to hell with this, I’m voting for a party that ISN’T right-wing” and leaving it for the Greens. To that end, expect a steadily-increasing barrage of anti-Greens smears everywhere from the Daily Telegraph to your letterbox, peaking in the last week with the most damaging, misleading, dishonest one they can imagine.

The one they’ve gone with today, courtesy of Paul Howes from the ALP-affiliated AWU, seems somewhat counterproductive, however:

Unfortunately for Brown and likeminded environmentalists, such as NSW MP Ian Cohen, his party is being infiltrated by many whose commitment to the environment is questionable, and who are more focused on turning the Greens into a left-wing, socialist-style party. Some people call these Greens “watermelons” – green on the outside, red on the inside.

The ALP is trying to scare left-wing voters back into the fold by telling them that the Greens are a left-wing party?

I’m not entirely convinced that will work.

PS “Stalinist”, Paul? Do you really think that will fly?

  1. Got to laugh at a socialist union hack labelling anyone red. 🙂

  2. Chutzpah. That is just hilarious.

  3. Splatterbottom

The ALP is trying to scare left-wing voters back into the fold by telling them that the Greens are a left-wing party?

No. Howes is alerting voters who are thinking of voting Green that the Greens are leftist party. Leftists will not see that as a disadvantage and centrist waverers should be aware of it.

  4. So the issue is over her using the taxpayer funded telephone in her office for the campaign rather than buying a new one, and the Democracy4Sale.org site being taxpayer funded? The first one seems a fairly minor issue, and the while there might be something wrong with the second (I haven’t looked into it) it’s not exactly hypocrisy to use taxpayer funds for a site

He might be onto something with the link between Josef “let’s just pour all the oil down this river” Stalin and the Greens. After all, I did buy a teatowel making fun of the Red Scare at a Greens event. This proves they must be communists.

  5. Also, who else are the other supposed “Watermelons” in the senate? Are they just being sneaky in not admitting to be an actual faction, or is Howes just projecting from his experience with Labor?

  6. “Howes is alerting voters who are thinking of voting Green that the Greens are leftist party. Leftists will not see that as a disadvantage and centrist waverers should be aware of it.”

So the market for Paul Howes’ important information is limited to centrist waverers who aren’t aware the Greens are a leftist party. Seems like a lot of trouble for Howes to go to for seven or so people.

  7. interestingly, the ETU’s 80,000 members have voted to move away from the ALP, and support the greens in Melbourne.

  8. I have no time for Paul Howes. Big time tool.

And how totally unoriginal with the ‘watermelon’ line.
