Republican debate twitches mildly

Joe Hockey is jockeying for the support of republicans:

Mr Hockey has held talks with the ARM about the Coalition’s position as republicans hope to once again have bipartisan support for their cause.

He advocated a ”bottom-up” approach to constitutional change, urging the republican movement to raise the debate in the community.

What precisely does he mean by that?

Just to reiterate: if the model offered is a direct election, in which we are guaranteed a politician – a partisan, one-sided Head of State – I will be voting for the status quo.

It’s a national tragedy we didn’t get the 2/3rds model proposed last time. And if, because of the dishonest campaign run against it by shameless liars like Sophie Mirabella and David Flint, we ultimately end up with a superficially attractive but ultimately destructive US model, well, I hope we remember where to allocate part of the responsibility for that.

PS More repulsive misleading guff from Flinty:

”As usual, Australia’s dwindling republican movement is whingeing about the Queen’s Birthday holiday instead of deigning to tell us how they want to change the constitution and the flag,” Professor Flint said.

Ugh.

Yep, me too. Direct election of our Head of State turns that office into a campaign machine much the same as the political parties: a grab for cash, and kowtowing to special interests in order to win endorsement. They can keep it if that’s what they want.

I tend to agree. However many seem hell bent on direct election- I don’t see how any other model could get up.

This issue will become critical when the lunatic tampon Prince Charles ascends the throne and is thus our head of state.

  4. in other important news, Hockey has a cappuccino and enjoys the rich arabica beans and smooth chocolate flakes
