An Onymous Lefty

I think they’d prefer NOT to be censored

Mumbrella (I know you’re a marketing site, but there’s nothing cool about randomly capitalising letters in your name AND I WON’T PLAY ALONG) thinks that Qantas censoring Get Up’s anti-censorship campaign was all part of the plan.

Dr Mumbo suspects that was a press release that was written well before the campaign launched.

I suspect GetUp would’ve rathered show the advertisement, though.

Trivializing rape porn and other evils on the net is not the way to go about gaining maximum support for the campaign. A comical green monster? The boogy-man?

In my opinion, they should be arguing for the compromise of a non-mandatory filter, not for no filter at all.

In demonizing the government they are standing up for demons.

    Now, back to Freeones.

Sorry, how are they “trivializing rape porn”?

    What are you talking about?

And they don’t have to argue for the “compromise of a non-mandatory filter” – there are plenty of optional filters already available.

Didn’t I see a boogy-man that was meant to be comical?

Did I imagine the boogy-man? Or is he real?

I don’t know what you mean, and I’m not sure how you’d conclude if you HAD seen a boogy-man that it was meant to represent “rape porn”.

I believe Wanker is trying to say this green guy in the website is supposed to trivialize whatever the bad thing is that the filter is to protect us from. In his case he’s decided “rape porn” is the part of the internet that he’s for it blocking. This is something he finds despicable.

My problem with that is however, what one person finds despicable varies from person to person. Many people have what you’d call a rape fantasy, including many women. In this so called “rape porn” it basically boils down to 2 consenting adults role playing something. It’s just acting, no different to Jodie Foster in The Accused. Those who watch it know it’s not real and would never do it in real life.

My fear is where would it end. The government may then decide that Bondage and Domination sites should be banned because they find them despicable, and what if we got someone like Fred Nile in who decided that all gay porn also needs to be blocked. Anything they don’t like that people be turned on by could be stopped until almost everything is not allowed.

Anything they don’t like could be blocked. I’ve also heard they’re planning on blocking sites that are pro abortion as well.

Obviously I’m not avocating stuff where it’s actually real rape. Those who make and view those should be prosecuted and when they have tracked them down their customers can be found out as well and locked up. Being against the filter does not make you for “the boogey men”. People need to stop with the you’re either with us or you’re with the evil doers kind of speak.

Illhp is on the money, for mine.

And then there’s the problem with supporters of the filter – up to and including it’s supporters in Parliament not being able to differentiate between children viewing porn and Child Pornography.

Some genuinely believe that Child Pornography is children viewing porn. And they don’t seem to realise that the best filter for that kidn of thing is attentive and responsible parenting.
